Most people do not like to talk about themselves, especially when you know you are being judged based on what you say.

As a candidate an interview can be terrifying. Why? Because we dread the question, what do you think about yourself? This is a difficult question to answer because you can seem like you think too much of yourself or that you think too little of yourself.

“Unfortunately, most employers have not found a way around asking interviewees for a self-assessment, meaning that you still need to objectively and convincingly communicate your skills and your ability to do the job.” (J. Zackal)

I read an article by Lara Galinsky and she has a different point of view than Justin Zackal does. Galinsky explains that your summary/objective is what employers look at before reading your qualifications. They want to know your story and not just your professional story.

“Your early years are critical to shaping your core values and authentic, untarnished self”.

In an interview when an employer asks a candidate to tell their story candidates begin telling the start of their professional story. Well, Galinsky says employers do this because they want to know your starting story, what made you who you are. They might do this because knowing what drives you as a person and what your interests are outside of work, gives them an idea of who you are.

 Sometimes employers do not base hiring off of your qualifications. If you are a good fit for the company based on your personality, they will have no problem training you. Some prefer it that way because then they can train you the way they want, you won’t have old habits to break from a previous job.

I want to hear from candidates. Two different people have different views on interviews and what is asked. So candidates, I ask, what do you think? In your experience in interviews, what is it that employers want to know from you?
