The Jordan Insurance Group, MD, Retirement basketWe are entering a new year which means new and exciting changes.  We don't want you to miss out any opportunities to improve your retirement plans so a year end review is in definite need.  Use these tips to check all of your investments: 1.  Check the bottom line for the end of 2013. Take out all of your statements for your retirement portfolio.  Look at your fund performance.  That's going to be  the key number for you.  Compare that number with other indexes similar to your investments.  The NASDAQ, Russell 2000 or S&P 500 are great resources to compare your performance with, depending upon your type of investments.  Does it match up?  Is it running behind?  Are you happy with the return you're getting?  If your numbers are just a little bit off, there's really nothing to worry about.  If a larger gap exists then you need to be concerned. 2.  Check your fees. Mutual funds have all kinds of fees, and you want to pay attention to the amount of fees you're paying.  Some mutual funds charge 3% and more.  If this is the case, it might be a good idea to search for alternative investments with lower fees. 3.  Make necessary changes to your portfolio. If your investments are under or over performing your asset allocation can be misrepresented.  Stocks can make you more money in the short run, but if the market crashes, you could lose big.  A good balance of mutual funds, stocks and other retirement investments will help ensure a more stable retirement portfolio.
