BaltimoreSnowWhen Old Man Winter starts raising heck, you want to be prepared. Of course, Maryland isn’t Siberia, but we do get our fair share of wind, rain, ice and snow, and it’s always best to put winter prep in place before you get stuck cleaning up a mess. Below we’ll talk about several things you need to do in order to prepare for winter, including safety precautions, money-saving tricks and necessary insurance. An ounce of prevention, as they say, is worth a pound of cure. Have Salt On Hand Even a small amount of snowfall or a thin sheet of ice can present a serious hazard to workers, especially elderly ones. Instead of hoping for the best, it’s crucial to keep salt or de-icing agent on hand. Store it somewhere accessible, so you don’t have to cross dangerous areas to get to it (detached sheds, for instance, are a no-go). Keep Snow Supplies at the Ready When snow does fall, it’s important to scrape it up as quickly as possible so later melts and thaws or rainfall doesn’t harden it to a sheet of slippery ice. You’ll need non-slip boots and a snow shovel at the ready, as well as winter gear so you don’t freeze while getting the job done. Keep them somewhere handy, like an indoor closet. Turn Off Outdoor Faucets Cold weather can bust pipes if it freezes the water coming out of them. Turn off the water to outside faucets, then open the tap to let them drain before the weather drops below freezing. Detach hoses too. Buy Life Insurance Unfortunately, people fall on ice or get stuck out in the snow in their cars every year … and every year, some of these accidents result in fatalities. While it isn’t likely this will happen to you, if it does, wouldn’t you want your family and loved ones to be protected? Getting a life insurance policy ahead of time can help ensure that your family is protected in case of a terrible accident, and offering it to your workers can help them protect the ones they love too. Preparing your office for winter doesn’t need to break the bank or take a ton of time. With a few supplies and a little foresight, you can save yourself time and money and protect the people that are important to you.
