Three Hidden Risks for Hunters

red-deer-225208_1280Hunting ranks as one of the safest sports activities, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Hunting education programs, funded by gun and ammunition sales, deserve a lot of the credit. In addition, hunters tend to take their responsibilities seriously: hunting means taking care of yourself, your fellow outdoorsman and the environment. That said, there are some risks associated with hunting that may not get the attention they deserve. For instance: Infections: We've all become more aware of disease risks in recent months. Unfortunately, ticks and mosquitoes are more common than game animals on many hunts. Protect yourself from bites and possible infection by wearing long sleeves and pants. Use bug spray or repellant on exposed areas. If you do get a bite, keep an eye on it and see a doctor if it looks inspected, increases in size or doesn't heal in a few days. Heart Attacks: Have you ever felt your heart pounding when a deer or other game enters your sights? That pulsing sensation is part of the thrill of the hunt, but it puts a lot of stress on your heart. Studies have shown that a hunter's heart rate can more than double due to exertion or excitement. Unfortunately, that increases the risk of heart attack, especially in people who have had heart problems in the past. You can reduce your risk by starting a regular fitness routine during the offseason. If you've had heart problems, try to hunt with a group or carry a cellphone so you can get help if you experience chest pains. Sunrise and Sunset: Many hunters prize getting out in the fresh morning air. But light conditions can be tricky at sunrise and again at dusk. Shadows are elongated and your target may appear distorted. Rather than risking a shot if you’re not sure of the target you can wait for more light, or pass up the shot. Better safe than sorry. Remember, hunting has its responsibilities, and also its liabilities. It’s worth checking to see if your personal liability or homeowners insurance covers your hunting gear and activities. Source:
