When and How Is Your ATV Insured?

You may already have several insurance policies that cover your all-terrain vehicle (ATV). Yet one of the most common and enjoyable ATV activities – off roading -- might not be covered by any of them. First, let's look at how and when your current insurance policies may apply: Auto Your auto policy will not cover your ATV. Even if your policy covers you when you rent a car, it won't apply to an ATV. Homeowner Your homeowner's coverage could kick in if your ATV is damaged on your property. Be sure to check if your policy includes liability coverage if someone is injured riding your ATV, or when hit by your ATV. Business If you use your ATV to haul products or for other business uses, your business property and general liability coverage should apply. Bear in mind that the coverage may exclude use of the ATV for personal reasons (i.e., for fun). Farm Again, if you use an ATV for farm work and have farm property insurance you should have coverage. Be sure to check whether there are limitations on off-road or personal use. Personal Umbrella This general cover-all policy could cover your liability if you injure someone while riding your ATV. Some policies have specific exclusions for equipment or potentially risky activities so check your exclusions to see if ATV riding or off roading is covered. Once you've reviewed your policy you may want to look into adding specific ATV insurance. This can consist of a rider to your existing coverage or a separate policy that covers your vehicle. Having a policy eliminates any gray areas and gives you the peace of mind that you have property and liability coverage when taking your ATV off your property and off the road. Sorting out the clauses and exclusions in multiple policies can seem like a daunting task. Remember a personal insurance agent can help you decipher your coverage and arrange for policies that meet your specific needs, on your property or of the road.
