Technology accounts are varied and present a wide array of professional liability exposures, and Mercator Risk Services has competitive markets for all of them. Most tech accounts will be in one of two groups:
 
Developers of Technology - Developers of technology are the most prevalent and significant buyers of professional liability insurance. Developers of technology, or information technology professionals (IT professionals), include website developers and systems consultants
 
Users of Technology - Users of technology are more varied and less likely to buy professional liability insurance, and the coverage needs are different from technology developers. Users of technology include:
  • Internet advertisers - traditional organizations utilizing the internet for marketing
  • e-professionals - providing traditional professional services over the internet
  • e-commerce companies - companies existing only on the net
  • "Clicks & mortar" companies traditional companies with a transactional web presence
  • Content providers - portals, search engines and other, specialized providers of content.
Each of these groups and the specialized organizations in them has a different set of exposures and need for coverage, although there is significant overlap between them.
 
The most prevalent purchasers of professional liability insurance are the developers of technology, or the IT professionals, which are professional organizations providing technology, systems and Internet services. These organizations include a wide range of businesses and can include any of the following types of services:

  • Systems and computer consultants
  • Database services
  • Network administrators
  • Security consultants
  • Software developers
  • Systems procurement
  • Transactional Internet services
Some technology accounts also have media exposures that arise from intellectual property, defamation and invasion of privacy claims. The intellectual property exposures, such as patent, copyright and trademark infringement, are an unpredictable and rapidly evolving area because the law as it applies to the Internet is not clearly defined.
