I am trying to find coverage for a start up risk, in Maryland, who will be operating 26 foot cube truck. It is a 1 vehicle/1person operation that will contractually be delivering for a major appliance/electronics retailer. Short haul with most trips within 50 miles. There will be delivery and installation.

He currently is employed by someone else doing the same. He has over 10 years experience and has created an LLC to perform the same function for himself.

All Risks, Ltd should be able to write it with National Indemnity. I would reach out to All Risks, Ltd. www.allrisks.com.
Good luck.

I would find out who she is delivering through... IE: Spirit Delivery, 3PD ? They have a hefty set of req's and can take a little bit to place all lines of coverage. We insure a fair amount of contract carriers, typically need to get them a WC, Excess, GL, CAL, Phys Dam, Cargo, Hired/Any Auto/Non Owned Auto lines of coverage before they can begin hauling for them. Most get sticker shock, probably will run in MD 20k all in... Maybe more, maybe less (i doubt much less than that). We don't write many MD risks due to them being high premiums and most CC's can't afford the insurance. Just some food for thought!

I write my contractor that hauls for Home Depot with Liberty Mutual. I do Liability, and full coverage on the trucks with them. For three trucks full coverage on 2 of them and 1 million liability it runs around $3400 a year.

Thats a great rate John! Also need to find out if the company they are hauling for requires them to have a MC#. If so you will need a carrier to post federal filings and not all carriers post federal filings.

Erik if they hauled within a federally designated commercial zone like Virginia/Maryland/Washington DC would they be exempt from being required to have an MC#?

Correct John... It does not go by the federally designated zones... If they are traveling across state lines and getting paid for the product being hauled, they need to have a MC#. (if you personally own the product, and not getting paid for hauling it, you do not need a MC#,but will need to have a DOT#). Some states have state specific filings that also have to completed. Those would be TX, NY, NM, KY, OH off the top of my head those are what I can remember... In this persons case, even if they are traveling a 50 mile radius, the company they are hauling for may require them to carry an MC# in case they do take the truck across state lines and have their product in the truck at the time... There's a little bit that goes into insuring a contract carrier, some are easy, some are tricky! Email me at [email protected] and I can see if we can help you out with insuring this risk.

Hi Jeffrey,

I see that you have received some great responses already. However, I wanted to mention that we have a company that writes Delivery Service in Maryland. I am sure that if you send them a submission they will get back to you soon and let you know if they can help

Good luck!
