... x No Thanks Loading.. Brain Tissue And Scar Tissue 4/30/2013 by CompleteMarkets Editor , Michael Manes This content has not been rated yet. BRAIN TISSUE AND SCAR TISSUE by Michael Manes A wise friend of mine often talks about brain tissue versus scar tissue. I agree with him that these are the two ways that we learn. Brain tissue is about schooling: academics, textbooks, and issues of the head. It includes the basic principles, standards, facts, and the rules that frame and sometimes limit our lives. During a lot of the time people spend in the world of brain tissue, they're sitting on their backsides listening to a teacher talk about life or reading about someone else's experiences. The teacher then grades (judges) and posts what each student learned. This type of learning opportunity is also limited, and the results are inconsistent — some people never learn to read, and others get a Ph.D. The quality of the results can vary because of the talent and focus of the student, facility, textbook, and/or instructor. All too often, brain tissue learning is about trying to force another person's knowledge to fit into our own skull. Using our brain tissue is a low-risk activity. It's life proposed — a thinking thing. Brain tissue is good. We retain much of what we learn this way or can recall it as it's needed. It's the stuff we try to remember. Scar tissue is about living, trying, failing, and trying again. These are matters of the heart and soul. Much of the ...

... world of academia, and fulfill what Max DePree calls the first role of a leader: To define "reality." Maybe you need to observe what's happening (reality), apply a dose of common sense, recognize that the world and your organization don't work from a script, and get the best results you can from the resources you have. Now that's management for reality. In business today, many people have great brainpower and education (formal learning) . The rest of us "dummies" have to get by with common sense and experience. "Brain Tissue" is about academics, sitting on your behind while someone else tells you what they know and think, and what to do or not do, based on their history or experience. It's all about them: The teacher. Scar Tissue is about experience (good or bad), issues of the heart and soul, falling on your rear while trying to do something (getting back up after you fall), and risking life, rather than wondering what life is like. It's all about you: The student. Scar Tissue is the best teacher. What follows are a series of "episodes" that I observed in a single week while visiting my mother-in-law during her recent hospitalization. Each episode concludes with a common sense observation that defines reality. Episode #1 — Common Sense Is Uncommon. Common Sense is a textbook oxymoron. Even though the sign says WET PAINT, we have to touch it — and then we get upset when our finger gets sticky. When my mother-in-law was in the hospital ...

... display that image, ' Wood said. Their best hires have been people who have grown up' in the industry, he added. Veteran or Rookie? The question of whether to hire a person with an insurance sales background or hire a rookie and train him always brings a different response. An experienced insurance producer who is willing to move to a new agency may be trouble for the new agency, according to many advisers. He may have several years of experience-all bad. He may be planning to retire. He may have been in the wrong job for many, many years. He will almost always command a higher salary than a newcomer. One agent who has had luck hiring producers over the years points out that previously the partners in his office were a bread man, a teacher, and a mailman. Steve Goodfellow, Ph.D., CPCU advocates hiring a young person - a college grad with sales aptitude - and training him or her in the insurance business. Goodfellow is president of Business Insurance Services in Tallahassee, Fla., and was previously director of management programs for the Florida Association of Insurance Agents. While he was with the Florida association, he conducted a program called Up-Start' in which he recruited and hired 14 college graduates and placed them in sales positions throughout Florida. About Tests Many agents are skeptical about using personality or psychological profile tests when hiring. They prefer to go by a gut reaction. But there are persuasive arguments for using them as part of the hiring process. The interview process is really a kind of theater, ' says Greenberg. ...

... sawdust under your feet enhanced your experience. In the language of your youth, it was "cool." Today you realize it was, in contemporary terms, the ultimate multisensory experience. Your heart was beating so fast! You're in the bleachers when you hear, "Ladies and gentlemen and children of all ages, look to the center ring and focus your eyes to the top of the tent. On the high wire the greatest with no net "Your mouth was wide open; your eyes were even wider. You don't remember breathing. She made it. No net! It was the most exciting thing you'd ever seen. You'll never forget it. This was the greatest show on earth, and she was the greatest performer. You loved your parents. Your mom was a teacher. Dad was a carpenter. You knew what they did. It was boring! You'd watched your friends' parents the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker. They were doctors, lawyers, and Indian chiefs. They were boring. You vowed that day to join the circus. This is what would make your heart beat fast. You never wanted to be boring. You shared your dream of a life under the big tent with your parents they laughed. You knew your life would be spent soaring, not boring! Fast forward to today. Today. On the way to work you passed the circus. They were raising the tent. You flashed back to yesterday. Now you're at your office only to realize that you've settled in. Worse than not joining the circus ...

... online learning provider, to create an e-learning environment that's very similar to RIMS' online educational program. They divide the classroom' into three main sections that lead students through their daily activities: announcements, calendar, and tasks. Claire Reiss, director of the Grants and Research Program at the Public Entity Research Institute, recently completed the online course for CPCU 8-Accounting and Finance, possibly one of the most difficult CPCU courses. As a working mother of two, Reiss appreciated that the course helped prepare her for the exam in a way that fit her schedule. Instead of sacrificing one night per week for a classroom course, Reiss studied online whenever and as often as she liked from her home. The best part of the course for Reiss was having someone to turn to with questions: The teacher was very helpful and responsive. She provided thoughtful responses to our answers to assigned questions, quizzes, and the practice final. She also provided lecture notes that highlighted the main points of each assignment and gave us some advice about how to focus our efforts. Overall, Reiss enjoyed the course and says it adequately prepared her for the national exam, which she passed. THE FUTURE OF ONLINE EDUCATION Claire Reiss and I had similar experiences and outcomes in our online learning adventures. Both RIMS and CPCU provided ways to study on our own time and at our own pace; yet we both noticed that the interactivity of the programs was virtually nonexistent. The format has potential for discussion among students, but lacks the urgency and leadership of a traditional classroom environment that promotes expression of ideas. Creating the ...
