... changes in the job market occur in small ways as well. Networks that link San Francisco Bay-area multimedia developers with high-speed lines allow them to transmit work electronically- which once had to be delivered physically- to special effects houses, post-production shops, and other service providers. San Francisco bicycle messengers, beware. Networks are squeezing the slack out of the system in innumerable ways. Food banks, for example, are reporting a drop in the amount of leftover food they collect from supermarkets as networked inventory systems enable the stores to receive just-in-time deliveries, eliminating waste. The changes are global. When Saudi Arabia solicited bids for upgrading its network, it asked providers whether there was a way to restrict access to sites on the Internet that contained sexual graphics. Singapore has made itself a regional hub of telecommunications while continuing to restrict the availability of information. The Net is decentralizing radically, putting computing power in the hands of a broad range of people for the first time. Just as the construction of interstate highways in the 1950s helped restructure the nation's geography around the automobile, opening the way for suburban subdivisions and tract malls, the spread of information networks is starting to reshape society around the computer- with unpredictable results. The best way to deal with this is to stay abreast of the changes: To be an actor, rather than acted upon. Jack Fries can be reached at Fries & Fries Consulting, P. O. ... at 95%, and people figure they're doing fine as long as they're at or near it. In the language of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, however, quality is a race with no finish line. There's no time of day or month on the calendar when it's okay to let up. The alternative to setting standards at the highest quality level becomes clearer when you look at the consequences of the almost but not quite' school of thought. If 99.9% is good enough, then . . . Two million documents will be lost by the IRS this year. 811,000 faulty rolls of 35mm film will be loaded this year. 22,000 checks will be deducted from the wrong bank accounts in the next 60 minutes. 1,314 phone calls will be misplaced by telecommunication services every minute. 12 babies will be given to the wrong parents each day. 268,500 defective tires will be shipped this year. 14,208 defective personal computers will be shipped this year. 2,200 gallons of coffee assumed to be caffeinated will turn out to be decaf instead-but consumed nonetheless in just one tax firm during the 1991 tax season. 103,260 income tax returns will be processed incorrectly this year. 2,488,200 books will be shipped in the next 12 months with the wrong cover. 5,517,200 cases of soft drinks produced in the next 12 months will be flatter than a bad tire. ... , it's not to see how much money we have in our savings account, where our line of credit is, and how much our house insured for. Building relationships is not about seeing all of your statements on one screen. Relationships are about creating new value for customers. So what kinds of new integrated services can be provided? For example, I'm planning my retirement. There are many insurance pieces to that whole picture, not just life insurance. It has to do with managing the risk in my life. Who will I call? Right now I don't call my life insurance agent, because I view him as a flogger of product, as opposed to someone who has an interest in my financial success. In ACORD: What is your position on the convergence of cable, telecommunications, entertainment, Internet, and E-mail? And how will this affect business? Tapscott: They're definitely converging. This is creating a new economic sector, which is the engine of the new economy. But it's a lot more than a sector, it's becoming the basis of all sectors, including insurance. And insurance companies need to join this sector. Insurance companies need to become new media companies in order to survive. ... company for the inefficiencies. T. Ruth Seekur: Let me address the future. This is what my clients want-innovation, efficient delivery, effective results, and to be asked about their wants and needs. We'll pay a fair price for excellent service. We don't care about policies and products. We want our problems solved and assistance in capitalizing on opportunities. We want positive buying experiences. We want excellent service as a minimum standard, and then we expect you to innovate to assure a future of better, simpler, and cheaper products and services. We want hassle in our lives removed or reduced. We want a relationship with someone who will use the Internet, technology, and any other tool available to help us-not themselves. We want new PEOs, legal and accounting services, coordination in telecommunication purchases, and information, information, information! We don't want to be sold. We want you to facilitate our buying. Judge Judy: Excellent! Are you boys and girls listening? Did you hear what's been said? Your future doesn't rest in this court. Your future is in the hands of the customer. If any of you will abandon your own special interest long enough to reach out to the customers, you'll do fine. If you continue to perpetuate your own self-serving systems, the court of public opinion will find you guilty and your sentence will be severe-it will be capital punishment! Court adjourned.
