4th of July fireworks, parades and cookouts are an excuse for you to relax with family and friends. As you plan your celebration this year, take several steps to ensure safety for everyone involved in celebrating the United States' birthday. Use Fireworks Safely Public fireworks displays are the safest way to enjoy the beautiful colors and terrific booms of this July 4th tradition, especially when you maintain a distance of at least 500 feet between you and the show. Firework displays at home can be fun though too. If you go that route, take these precautions. Follow the instructions on the packaging. Never allow children to play with the fireworks. Stock a fire extinguisher or water supply nearby. Wear eye protection when lighting fireworks. Remove flammable materials from the area. Never point fireworks toward people, animals, vehicles or structures. Properly dispose of duds rather than trying to relight them. Take Precautions While Grilling Burgers, hot dogs, fruit and pizza taste delicious when they're grilled. Grab your favorite side dishes and follow a few precautions that ensure you and your guests grill safely. Always supervise the grill when it's in use. Never grill indoors or in a fully enclosed area such as a garage or tent. Use lighter fluid sparingly and never after the coals are ignited. Keep children and pets away from the hot grill. Remove flammable objects, including trees, from near the grill. Use long-handled tools to handle food. Stay Safe on the Beach Swimming is a fun summer activity, and it's good exercise. At the beach, lake, public pool or backyard pool, stay safe with these tips. Swim only in designated areas. Obey the lifeguard and all posted signs. Swim sober. Get out of the water during a storm or if you hear thunder or see lightening. Require children to wear life jackets. Don't dive into shallow water. Wear Sun Bathing Protection Picnics are part of many July 4th celebrations. You should also take these protective measures. Wear sunscreen that's at least 15 SPF. Remember to apply sunscreen to your ears, hair part and the tops of your feet. Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the UV rays are strongest. Reapply sunscreen every two to three hours or more frequently if you're sweating. Drink plenty of water even if you're not thirsty. Wear a hat, sunglasses and long sleeves if you have to be in direct sunlight. Watch for signs of heat stroke, including hot, red skin, shallow breathing and rapid, weak pulse. Your July 4th celebration will be safe when you take these steps. For more advice, talk to your health insurance agent. He or she stands ready to help you have the best birthday party ever.

Monte Vista Christian School to donate portions of proceeds from event Watsonville >> The Monte Vista Christian School performing arts department is putting on a Disney-themed concert to raise the spirits of children with cancer as well as funds for Jacob's Heart. The Watsonville-based private school's show Friday at the Mello Center for the Performing Arts, 250 E. Beach St. in Watsonville, will feature a number of songs from the Disney repertoire with a strong focus on the latest animated movie, "Frozen." Proceeds from the concert will go to Jacob's Heart, the Watsonville-based nonprofit that helps children with cancer and their families. "Since the concern is basically for the children (at Jacob's Heart), we're going to make it a Disney-themed concert," said Tony Dehner, director of vocal arts at Monte Vista. It's the first time Monte Vista has organized a concert fundraiser, according to Dehner. The idea was sparked from a conversation Dehner had with Watsonville Police Chief Manny Solano. The two spoke at a dinner event in November to celebrate Solano's 18-year-old son, who attends Monte Vista and sings in the school's choir, making it into the California regional honor choir. "We're Facebook buddies so he had been following the various stories through my wife's posting of my updates," Solano said, referencing his own battle with cancer. Solano publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis in August and took a three-month leave of absence from the police department to focus on treatment. During the conversation, Solano talked about his cancer battle and Jacob's Heart, which Solano has been a strong advocate and supporter of, came up in the discussion. Eventually Dehner suggested a fundraiser for the nonprofit and, soon, the concert was conceived. "It's just been a great opportunity to bring people together," Solano said. Though the school hosts a spring concert each year, it has traditionally taken place at the high school's auditorium. The decision to change venues to the Mello Center was prompted in part because of the expected number of attendees. The concert will feature two sections. The first half will focus on popular and classic songs and a second half will focus on Disney songs. Songs from "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" movies are in the first part of the program as well as a song by Led Zeppelin. The Disney portion of the show will feature 20 characters from the franchise, all in costume, Dehner said. "I'm pretty sure we're going to sell out," he said. Children from Jacob's Heart and their families are expected to attend the show, free of charge, Dehner said. About 170 Monte Vista students will take part in the performance, including three choirs, the vocal ensemble, the jazz band, the orchestra, the high school band, the dance team and the handbell choir. "The guests will be treated to really quality and incredible music and singing that is right here in our own backyard," Solano said. All tickets are $10. https://completemarkets.com/Blog/post/ScurichInsuranceServices/1257/Start-2014-with-wellness/
Seven principles lay the foundation for effective wellness.  The principles are think, breathe, drink, eat, sleep, exercise, detox and environmental.  Within these principles are the keys to a well-balanced wellness program.   Here are just ten tips to get you started.  Pay attention to your thoughts.  It’s real easy to get caught up in the negativity with this world today.  Don’t let that happen to you.  Stay positive.  Positive thoughts include gratitude, forgiveness, courage, happiness and there’s so much more I haven’t even touched on.  Learn to breathe.  Breathing exercises have been proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, heart rate, circulation, digestion and many more! Drink lots of water.  Water helps maintain the body’s fluid levels, helps control calories, energizes muscles, water helps your skin maintain a good look and many more!  Water is essential to your overall healthy lifestyle. Get in touch with your spiritual side.  Pray, meditate, and go for a walk in the labyrinth. Eat organically.  Fresh fruit, vegetables, little starch and carbohydrates.  Blueberries, beans, broccoli, oats, oranges, salmon, pumpkin, soy, spinach, tomatoes, turkey, walnuts, tea (green and black) and yogurt are just a few of the super foods.   Olive oil is another favorite of mine.  I use it exclusively for everything. Get plenty of sleep.  Sleep helps improve your memory, sleep can help you live longer, spurs creativity, sharpens attention span and helps you maintain a healthy weight. Get out and move.   Yoga is great for stretching the tired muscles, going for a brisk walk benefits your heart, running helps your relieve stress and even can eliminate depression, do a high impact cardio workout.  Twenty minutes a day three days a week and you’ll be seeing a change in yourself. Get rid of all the junk.  Throw out the processed macaroni and chesses boxes, pass by McDonald’s and see how differently your body will react.  It’s a known fact that the fast and processed foods that we eat everyday drag us down.  Get rid of it and feel more energized. Get away from it all.  Go up the mountains and surround yourself with peace or go to the beach and soak up the sun.  The concrete jungle is not going to cut it.  Make a monthly effort to get away from it, even if it’s for a nice long day hike. Have fun.  Anything and everything that you do, make sure that you have fun doing it. Content provided by Transformer Marketing.
