Monday the US government took steps toward opening the skies to aerial drones. They have authorized six sites, in Alaska, New York, North Dakota, Texas, North Carolina, and Virginia, where unmanned aircraft will be tested for a variety of uses. This decision will be giving companies, universities and others a place to test much broader uses, such as crop spraying, catching exotic animal’s poachers or delivering packages. Drones are also popular with law enforcement because they are smaller and less costly alternatives to manned aircraft. The drones do come with some concern, such as privacy issues. Some are concerned this will be another way the government can monitor you. Though Operators of the new FAA test sites are required to develop a written privacy policy, and to address to safety concerns, but it is not clear whether the policies will protect privacy. How do you feel about the drones? Do you think they will prove to be a problem with privacy? Or do you think it is just the next step toward the future? How do you see this affecting insurance?

Hello. I am looking for a carrier that would have an appetite for property & GL coverage for a retreat center that specializes in fitness & weight loss. Ever see the show "Biggest Losers". Well...this is kind of like that but the clients pay to come stay for a week or so where they go through a training. The way I see it, there are two components. One is to make sure that the property is properly insured. Second, need to make sure the owner of the business can get GL/PL coverage for her operations. The insured has been turned down by Markel & K&K already. Not sure what other markets to approach. Very interesting risk....kind of like a health club/hotel/retreat center. Challenging deal... Thanks for your thoughts on this one.

“So, are you happy with your website?” The response from typical agency owners is mixed at best, with some key observations in common: Unfulfilled expectations and a lack of quantifiable results. We’ve looked into the evolution of the independent agency website during the past several years and concluded that technological and design innovations alone have not improved engagement with your audience of prospects and clients (a wrench cannot loosen a fastener by itself). We have identified the demographic trends that affect not only the “what” but also the “how” and “why” of effective website deployment. And finally, we have encouraged you to examine the role that your website plays in your agency’s overall marketing strategy, with key mission-related questions that should help to remove any barriers between your agency and its audience. Remember: Your website is not the relationship. It is a two-way communication hub that helps you – and your clients and prospects – to grow and maintain the relationship. Click here to read the entire article 'Why your website is letting you down' authored by yours truly in Rough Notes magazine’s October 2011 issue.

What will uninsured young adults be doing when state exchanges created under “Obamacare” open on Oct. 1? “Contrary to commonly held beliefs, young adults do want affordable health coverage,” said Dr. David Blumenthal, president of the nonpartisan Commonwealth Fund. The group’s study dispels the notion that young adults don’t think they need coverage because they feel invincible, said lead author Sara Collins. That optimistic conclusion comes from what young adults do when offered an opportunity to buy health insurance through their jobs. In such cases, 67 percent took the coverage. For those who declined, the chief reasons were that they were covered by a family member (54 percent) or couldn't afford the premiums (22 percent). Only 5 percent turned down coverage because they felt they were unlikely to need much medical care. Any thoughts?
