Did you know the rate of illnesses at work has significantly dropped in North Carolina? The North Carolina Department of Labor reported that fatalities dropped from 53 in 2011 to 35 in 2012. While the rate of injuries or sickness during the previous three years was at 3.1 per 100 workers. Last year this dropped to 2.9 incidents for every 100 full-time employees. Can you believe in 1999 the rate was nearly twice as high? But why have the numbers been dropping so much? Officials attribute the drop in part to the state’s own efforts at accident prevention. How have they done this? The Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Division has established partnerships with some of the most hazardous industries. After identifying problems in areas like forklifts, struck-bys, heat stress and firefighting, the division issued a hazard alert for those areas. There were no work related fatalities in 75 of North Carolinas 100 counties. Do you think it is possible to make these numbers drop even more?
