In an effort to protect the barrier system and prevent future flood damage, the Coastal Barrier Resources Act (CBRA) of 1982 restricted development on the Coastal Barrier Resource System (CBRS).
On December 20, 2018 the CBRS map was updated in a bill* passed by Congress that revised the maps, adding eligible underdeveloped areas to the System, increasing the area of ineligible National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) properties.
If your client lives in a CBRS area, they may not be eligible for federally regulated flood insurance, which could put their property at risk, or delay home loan closings altogether.
*H.R. 5787
