These situations get me thinking about other natural events such as sandstorms, tornadoes, and even volcanic activity (remember the events in Hawaii last year?). The world is a dangerous place, but humans and industry has found ways to keep things moving, and there are instruments out there to protect individuals and communities from having to bear the full brunt of catastrophic losses. It's fascinating to me how insurance originated hundreds of years ago (technically thousands of years, if you consider Hammurabi's Code in Babylonia sometime around 1770 BC), back when pioneers were exploring the "new world", and venture capitalists would fund voyages in hopes of getting a "share" of whatever the pioneers discovered in North America.
