There was a recent article posted in one of the various groups to which I subscribe that discussed the impact the internet has had on the insurance industry. Does anyone here see an increase or decrease in the amount of business they have developed from internet technology? Is so, would you share any specific instances? Has CompleteMarkets helped? Where do you see the bulk of you revenue coming from? Do you see anything new in our industry that is changing the way you do business? From the responses I received recently to an internet poll conducted many of you prefer to use a number of different marketing methods, traditional and non-traditional. What are your thoughts? I have a client who owns a hay hauling business in Jerome, ID that I am shopping Workers Compensation coverage for. He has been with Idaho State Fund since he started hiring drivers (early 2000's) and has never had a claim. They don't exceed a 300 mile radius on their runs. Currently there are 4 drivers, but two of them are ownership and would decline coverage. The other two are being paid about $100K a year total. Can anyone help me with this? I've been hunting all day and decided to try here. Thanks for your help! A. Okahoma has a new workers compensation law that is causing a lot of turmoil. Among other things, the law changes Oklahoma’s court-based system to an administrative one. The supporters say the change will dramatically reduce workers’ compensation costs to businesses, but opponents have said any cost savings will come at the expense of injured workers. Those oppose have said that this law violates the state Constitution in several ways and should be struck down. The new law was challenged in a lawsuit filed in September. Oklahoma City attorney John McMurry said the lawsuit is not an attack on the Legislation’s attempt to transform Oklahoma’s workers’ compensation system into an administrative system. Instead the lawsuit attacks Provisions of the law that would unconstitutionally delay an injured worker’s access to the state’s court to seek compensation. This would allow employers to “opt-out” of the administrative system and create their own benefit plan for injured workers. What do you think of the new workers compensation law that has caused so much discussion in Oklahoma? For the whole story go Here

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Piping Technology and Products Inc. in Houston for four repeat and three serious violations after a worker was injured in June from being struck by a broken die piece on a mechanical press. The repeat violations were cited for failing to guard punch presses and band saws, provide lockout/tagout training regarding energized sources and conduct an annual review of lockout/tagout procedures. The serious violations were cited for a failing to secure a fuel gas cylinder, use undamaged slings for lifting and moving equipment and provide strain relief for electrical wiring. A repeat violation is when an employer has been previously cited for the same or a similar violation of a standard, regulation, rule or order at any other facility in federal enforcement states within the last five years. This particular company was previously cited for similar violations in 2011. A serious violation is when there is substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known. Do you feel this company should have spent more time making sure their employees work environment was safe? For the whole story go Here

Did you know the rate of illnesses at work has significantly dropped in North Carolina? The North Carolina Department of Labor reported that fatalities dropped from 53 in 2011 to 35 in 2012. While the rate of injuries or sickness during the previous three years was at 3.1 per 100 workers. Last year this dropped to 2.9 incidents for every 100 full-time employees. Can you believe in 1999 the rate was nearly twice as high? But why have the numbers been dropping so much? Officials attribute the drop in part to the state’s own efforts at accident prevention. How have they done this? The Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Division has established partnerships with some of the most hazardous industries. After identifying problems in areas like forklifts, struck-bys, heat stress and firefighting, the division issued a hazard alert for those areas. There were no work related fatalities in 75 of North Carolinas 100 counties. Do you think it is possible to make these numbers drop even more? If so what do you think would be the best way to do that? Cited information found Here
