The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Piping Technology and Products Inc. in Houston for four repeat and three serious violations after a worker was injured in June from being struck by a broken die piece on a mechanical press. The repeat violations were cited for failing to guard punch presses and band saws, provide lockout/tagout training regarding energized sources and conduct an annual review of lockout/tagout procedures. The serious violations were cited for a failing to secure a fuel gas cylinder, use undamaged slings for lifting and moving equipment and provide strain relief for electrical wiring. A repeat violation is when an employer has been previously cited for the same or a similar violation of a standard, regulation, rule or order at any other facility in federal enforcement states within the last five years. This particular company was previously cited for similar violations in 2011. A serious violation is when there is substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known. Do you feel this company should have spent more time making sure their employees work environment was safe? For the whole story go Here

As the housing market improves, buyers can, once again get a low down payment mortgage with as little as 3.5% down. Traditionally a 20% down payment is required for a mortgage. It is virtually impossible for people who are paying rent each month to save up enough for a 20% down payment. For potential homebuyers these lower down payments are a good thing for many people. Depending on your lender and your financial history (especially your credit scores), a lower down payment may mean a higher interest rate. A half percent interest rate can make a difference of nearly $25,000 over 30 years! Anytime you put less than 20% down on you home (except with some specialized loan programs; you will have to pay what’s called private mortgage insurance. This insurance goes to a third party, and basically guarantees the Leander that if you default on your loan, the lender will get their money back out of the investment. If you get private mortgage insurance it will cost you anywhere from $50 a month to more than $100, this will be added to your mortgage payments. Do you think Private Mortgage Insurance is worth the extra cost?

The average American wedding is reaching about $26,000, so insurers have been selling a growing number of policies to protect against losses from extreme weather, illness and in one firm’s case, even a sudden change of heart. Only a small number of U.S. companies offer this insurance. It can cover losses from issues ranging from bankrupt wedding halls to cancellations forced by unexpected military deployments. Travelers say issues with vendors account for about a quarter of the claims, with most of those related to issues with photographers or videographers. For Travelers, an insurance giant with annual revenue of $26 billion, the policies will not make or break the bottom line. But the wedding insurance it began selling in 2007 is also a way to connect with a couple who might later think of the company for home insurance and other life milestones. “It could be the beginning of a relationship with a young couple,” said Ed Charlebois, a Travelers vice president for personal insurance. Do you feel this is a good way to begin relationships with possible future clients? Why do you think more companies do not cover this type of insurance?

Monday the US government took steps toward opening the skies to aerial drones. They have authorized six sites, in Alaska, New York, North Dakota, Texas, North Carolina, and Virginia, where unmanned aircraft will be tested for a variety of uses. This decision will be giving companies, universities and others a place to test much broader uses, such as crop spraying, catching exotic animal’s poachers or delivering packages. Drones are also popular with law enforcement because they are smaller and less costly alternatives to manned aircraft. The drones do come with some concern, such as privacy issues. Some are concerned this will be another way the government can monitor you. Though Operators of the new FAA test sites are required to develop a written privacy policy, and to address to safety concerns, but it is not clear whether the policies will protect privacy. How do you feel about the drones? Do you think they will prove to be a problem with privacy? Or do you think it is just the next step toward the future? How do you see this affecting insurance?
