COVID-19 has forever changed the world as we know it, and even the world of the insurance agent has suddenly changed dramatically. This is one of those moments that will forever go down as the biggest moment in our living history.

COVID-19For most of the world, remote work is new and difficult; an understanding that everyone is having to come to terms with. This includes insurance agents- which is why we assume you are here. In this article, we will review the many ways that the insurance market is being affected by the coronavirus pandemic of 2020.

The Numbers

The economy has taken a major hit since the pandemic began to cause mass hysteria around the globe. In the United states, the stock market has crashed completely. Meanwhile, streaming services are making bank and internet companies are working around the clock to keep all of the different areas of the world “plugged in” to their only source of entertainment.

In the area of insurance, the traffic that we see is hard to predict. There are major differences from day to day in our productivity, and guessing how a pandemic is going to affect our numbers is difficult to say. You might want to check out how to create estimate costs to help you talk with new customers.

What Should Agents Expect

There are three major areas where insurance agents have been and continue to be affected as far as insurance goes.

First of all, most of the offices around the globe have been closed. There is nowhere for the people who answer generic insurance questions over the phone to go to work. This means that agents and their employees are going to be dealing with many questions that would normally be directed to a call center.

Further, you will have to do quite a bit more work to generate the traffic that walks into your office. Where you normally would have people sending you traffic, you will have to go out and find some customers on your own- this might be a bit of a change to the normal stream of business that files into your office weekly during a normal time.

What Should You Do?

You should be thinking first and foremost about your clients. Those reciprocals are important for your business and you need to maintain the clients you have.

Utilize technology to stay in contact with the clients you would normally see in your office. Zoom, Skype, Or Facetime are all great resources to help you see the client and maintain a working relationship. You might also utilize text messages or even more phone calls to keep in touch.

These same resources will be helpful to you in developing potential relationships with new clients as well.

Final Thoughts

Many people probably expect an uptick in the insurance market during a pandemic. Unfortunately, the fact is that jobs are being lost and insurance policies are sometimes canceled or abandoned during a time of crisis. As the insurance agent, your job is to find ways to protect the people in your community by whatever means necessary.
