Laptop Travel Tips

If you expect to be traveling with a laptop, here are a few words of caution and advice gleaned from personal experience and war stories from other 'road warriors.'

  • Almost all computer bags look alike: black leather, shoulder straps, and handles. Put some distinguishing colored strip on your bag to distinguish it from the others. If someone else picks up your bag, you'll know it.
  • Business travelers carrying laptops are high-profile targets for criminals. When sending your computer through the X-ray machine, the bad guys can easily take it from the other end before you've passed the security gate. Make sure that nobody precedes you in the line before you place your laptop on the belt. To speed your way through the line, remove all coins, keys, and other metal items from your pockets before you approach the gate.
  • Some airliners have magnets installed in the tray tables and seat armrests to keep them from rattling. These magnets can erase notebook hard disks. Tap tray tables and armrests with a paper clip to determine whether they're magnetized.
  • Earphones are an inexpensive accessory that add pleasure to traveling with a laptop. Bring a pair to listen to your favorite music while you work without disturbing anyone around you.
