Why Should You Network?

Most college career counselors and career building websites are quick to sing the praises of networking.  There is an old adage, which has proven increasingly true, that “you are only as good as who you know.”  This adage actually pre-dates the Internet.

Increasingly though, Social and Professional Networking websites are replacing – or at least vastly supplementing - the traditional networking venues: Golf Courses, Fraternity and Civic Organizations, and Professional Networking Events.

As an Insurance Professional, only two networking sites should matter to you:
LinkedIn and CompleteMarkets.com – Where Insurance Goes To Network™

LinkedIn has gained a lot of traction in recent years, and has great potential as a place to prospect for clients – especially commercial/B2B clients.  This is because of the somewhat “open” nature of that platform.  However, because it is open to just about anyone, it is also pretty easy to be marketed to yourself while on there - Often by companies that you have little or no professional interest in.  In other words: LinkedIn can be a bit “spammy” by its very nature.

When you wish to communicate specifically with other Insurance professionals, your best option is a site that specializes in serving the Insurance community.  The advantages of networking in a targeted community should be obvious.  These are your peers, competitors, and the service-providers for your industry.  There is much to be learned from all.  And, by sharing what experience, knowledge, and advice you have to offer, you will attract those people and companies that best align with your ideologies.

Building your professional network can reinforce your position as an expert in your industry.  And, unlike a “general” networking site, the content you peruse and conversations you engage in will likely be more pertinent to your professional interests.
