Winter weather is a distant memory now that spring has officially arrived. Clean your car and maximize its performance and appearance this spring with these tips.
Wash and Wax the Outside
- Choose a shady spot.
- Use soap that's specifically designed for vehicles and soft cotton or terry cloths to avoid scratching the finish.
- Remember to wash the wheel wells, undercarriage and doorjambs.
- Clean the inside and outside of the windows.
- Apply wax to protect your vehicle from UV damage, dirt and bugs.

Clean the Inside
- Vacuum the floors, under the seat and the trunk or rear cargo area.
- Wash the upholstery, leather or plastic seats with a product recommended for that surface. Apply wax or waterproofing material if you want.
- Use compressed air to clear dust out of vents, the shifter, the console and other small crevices.
- Place a trash bag or box in the car.
- Remove items you don't need and secure anything you do need. Remember that unsecured stuff in your vehicle is a safety hazard if you have to brake suddenly.

Check the Engine
- Top off the power steering, brake, coolant and transmission fluids if needed, and change the ones that are due.
- Change the oil and the filter. Your engine will run better and longer with the manufacturer-recommended viscosity.
- Inspect the air filter. If it's dirty, dusty or grimy, replace it.
- Fill the window washer fluid and replace worn wipers.
- Inspect the belts and replace any that are worn.
- Remove any accumulated fluids or dirt.
Inspect the Tires
- Switch from winter to all-weather tires with adequate tread and no wear, bulges or tears.
- Rotate the tires and properly inflate them.
Brakes
- Inspect the entire brake system, including pads, calipers, motors, cables and bearings. Replace them if they're worn.
As you welcome warmer weather, remember to clean your car. You can do it yourself or take it to a trusted mechanic or detailer, and double check your auto insurance as you protect your investment this spring by choosing to talk to an agent.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I wash and wax my car?
Wash regularly to remove dirt and salt—typically every 1–2 weeks—and apply wax every few months or as recommended by the product for ongoing protection.
Can I use household cleaners on my car seats?
It's best to use products recommended for the specific material (fabric, leather, vinyl) to avoid damage or discoloration.
When should I check my tires and brakes after winter?
Inspect tires and brakes at the first sign of uneven wear, vibration, or reduced performance, and schedule a full check during a spring tune-up if you haven't already.
Is professional detailing necessary?
Professional detailing can restore and protect finishes and interiors, but routine at-home maintenance prevents most common issues.
