Tips on picking vegetables before they spoil

Author TonyScurich , 9/29/2014
VeggiesIt happens all the time.  You go to the grocery store to load up on vegetables only to find when you cut into them, that they are rotten.   Do you wanna know how to avoid that from happening again?  Follow these simple tips when buying vegetables. Asparagus is best purchased in the spring.  The tips should be closed and compact.  The stems should go be green. Beets are one of the vegetables that you can get all year around.  Good beets would be rich in red color and be firm and round. Brussel Sprouts are best between October and December, but you can still find good ones 10 months out of the year.  Good ones won’t have any bruising or blemishing, be firm, and rich in green color. Carrots are available all year long.  A firm carrot will be smooth and well formed.  The tops should be green in color. Celery is available all year long.  A glossy surface and green leaflets are tell-tale signs of healthy celery. Corn is available all year long with the best time for corn is May-September.  Green husks and plump kernels are the best way to tell if your corn is going to be good. There are no bad times to buy lettuce, mushrooms, or onions.  But in order to get the cream of the crop you have to look out for healthy and vibrant leaves on lettuce, Caps should be white or brown consistently throughout the mushroom, and onions should be firm with dry necks. Next time you are at the grocery store, you’ll know what to look for when purchasing your favorite vegetables. Content provided by Transformer Marketing. Let’s talk about chimney fires

Author TonyScurich , 9/29/2014
FireLet’s talk about chimney fires We’ve been discussing home improvement tips before the winter season come.  We have discussed the importance of maintaining your home, cleaning out your gutter, and a general list of other to-do’s this fall.  Now we are going to discuss about the importance of taking care of your chimney. Why do I need my chimney inspected? Creosote is what gets left behind after burning wood, and it’s highly flammable.  Pine wood is notorious for leaving a lot of creosote behind.  If your chimney has too much creosote (or under the right conditions) you could find yourself in the middle of a chimney fire. How often should I get my chimney inspected? It’s a good idea to get your chimney inspected annually.  Most chimney sweeps will not only check for built up creosote, but will also check to make sure that everything is working properly.  It’s not a bad idea to get your chimney cleaned out each year.  It’s a good preventive measure to save you and your family. By calling a chimney sweep and getting your wood stove, pellet stove, or fireplace inspected, you are maintaining your home and ensuring the safety of your family.  Plus, you’re also meeting the maintenance requirements for your homeowner’s insurance policy. Tips to clean out your gutter

Author TonyScurich , 9/23/2014
Now that you know what damage not cleaning your gutter can do to your home, we wanted to share some tips with you on cleaning that gutter out.
  1. Gutter 2Keep that ladder out and clean out all the debris that has been left in the gutter.  One way to do that is to use a pressure washer.  Keep that debris though, it could be used for mulch.
  2. Check all your spikes and make sure that the spikes are properly placed throughout the gutter.  You may need to consider getting some new ones, if warranted.
  3. Use bead silicon sealing to close up any leaks your gutter may have.  This sealant will be proven effective against rain, snow, and ice.
  4.  Inspect all the rivets that need to go into your gutter also.  It may be time to replace them.  Any local hardware store will have the rivets and a rivet gun for you to purchase.
  5. Before using the pressure washer, make sure your gutter is securely fastened with all the new rivets and spikes.
  6. If your gutters are rusted out, you may want to consider replacing them with aluminum or vinyl gutters.
Now that your gutters are all taken care of, let’s move onto the next in our home improvement series, chimney repair. Scurich Insurance Services can help you with all of your homeowners’ insurance needs.  Give them a call today. Content provided by Transformer Marketing. Gutter problems

Author TonyScurich , 9/23/2014
In an earlier article, we discussed tips to get your home ready for the fall season.  These tips are important, so there could be no potential denial of coverage should you need to file a claim. In this article, we want you to know what happens when you don’t clean out your gutter and the potential damage it could cause.
  • GutterLeaking gutters.  On the extreme side leaky gutters can also cause leaky roofs, mold, and it can rot away at the surroundings.
  • Leaky roofs.  If your gutter is filled with debris, any rain, snow, or ice, won’t be able to go anywhere, causing a leaky (and expensive repair) roof.
  • Basement leaks.  Gutters usually end up at the foundation of the house.  If there is any damage to the run off, then the water can wind up in your basement.
  • Rotted Wood.  Some houses and/or foundations are made of wood.  If the gutter is not properly taken care of, the build-up will cause wood to rot.
  • Cracks in foundation.  Same principle as above.  Any debris left can create cracks in the foundation.
This fall, don’t let your gutter get the best of you.  Stay tuned for Scurich’s tips to clean out your gutter. Content provided by Transformer Marketing.

WORKERS COMP: MYTHS AND REALITY

Author TonyScurich , 9/22/2014

If you believe you don’t need Workers Compensation insurance, here’s a reality check:myth

Myth. I only have a few employees, or mostly part-time employees.

Reality: Workers Comp makes sense no matter how many employees you have. It helps cover medical expenses and lost wages for employees with job-related injuries and protects against lawsuits from injured workers if you’re found negligent. What’s more, some customers and clients may require you to carry it.

Myth: My employees won’t sue me.

Reality: Never say never. Injured workers might well sue to pay medical bills that could run into millions – not to mention pain and suffering or punitive damages. Workers Comp provides legal defenses that can slash your liability.

Myth: Workers Comp is too expensive. If one of my employees is injured, I’ll just pay out-of-pocket.

Reality: Weigh the cost of coverage against potential losses from an injury, especially if the employee sues. The longer a worker is off the job, the more it costs to cover lost wages and productivity. Severe injuries can take weeks or months to heal– or even lead to permanent impairment.

Myth: I provide a safe workplace. My employees won’t get injured.

Reality: Mistakes happen even in the “safest” workplace. Many companies post signs proclaiming the number of days without an injury on the job, but rarely do they read “365 days” Even the most minor mishaps can cause major damages.

Myth: Medical costs in the Workers Comp system are too high.

According to the National Council of Compensation Insurance, the medical cost inflation rate for Comp has been similar to that for Group Health insurance during the past several years. Legislation and regulations have led to the expansion of cost-containment programs.

To make sure you have this essential protection, at an affordable cost, just give us a call.

Four Holistic Ways to Stop Smoking

Author TonyScurich , 9/10/2014
SmokingWhen you smoke, your risk of developing lung, throat and mouth cancers as well as heart disease, stroke and diabetes increases. You also may experience shortness of breath and increased life insurance premiums. Up to 480,000 people die each year from the effects of smoking, but you can quit. Try four holistic methods as you seek to improve your health today.

1. Exercise

Sweat out the buildup of nicotine in your body, relieve depression and reduce boredom when you use exercise to stop smoking. Whether you run, swim, walk or try a different sport, the physical activity increases your odds of quitting.

2. Limes

In addition to flavoring entrees and beverages, limes boost your immunity and decrease your body's acidity. Use them to quit smoking when you cut the quarters of a lime into quarters. Chew on one small piece, skin and all, whenever you feel a cigarette craving.

3. Self-Massage

Professional massages relax your body and your mind, which helps you handle nicotine cravings. However, you don't have time for a full-body massage every time you want to smoke. Instead, learn self-massage techniques that are easy to perform multiple times a day.

*Use your right thumb and slight pressure to draw a circle in the palm of your left hand. Switch hands frequently.
* Massage each finger gently from bottom to top.
*Rub your ear lobes in circular motions.

4. Meditate

Reduce tension, stress and anxiety caused by nicotine withdrawal when you meditate. Start by lying down on your back and breathing deeply from your abdomen. Envision yourself cigarette-free and healthy as you exhale and inhale. Spend 15 minutes meditating, and your entire body will be calm and relaxed.

Smoking increases your risk of developing a number of deadly illnesses and diseases. It also affects your ability to afford beneficial life insurance coverage that gives your family peace of mind and financial security. Use four holistic methods to quit smoking today, and commit to healthy living.

What is desalination?

Author TonyScurich , 9/8/2014
Glass of waterThe California drought has gotten out of control.  That is why a private company stepped up and paid $1 billion for a new desalination plant located in Carlsbad. The drought has really impacted Southern California within this last year, however, the drought has been drying up some parts of California for years. What is desalination? Basically, it’s a sifting process which removes salt and other minerals from salt water that is retrieved from the sea.  This process will make the water safe for drinking and irrigation.  Desalination is a more expensive process to provide potable water. Alternatives There are alternative methods to providing drinking water which are less expensive than desalination.  The methods include ground water, which is obtaining drinking water from natural resources including rivers, lakes, and even digging underground for water. Another method is water recycling.  In Orange County, California, water recycling is underway.  Since 2008, Orange County has provided residents with billions of gallons of potable water from the recycling facility.  By 2015, Orange County will be providing an additional 30 million gallons per day, all thanks to their expansion efforts. The drought in California has gotten so bad that even wells in Bakersfield, have run dry. Content provided by Transformer Marketing. Have you heard about criminal iden

Author TonyScurich , 7/14/2014

Criminal identity theft occurs when an imposter gives another person's name and personal information such as a drivers' license, date of birth, or Social Security number (SSN) to a law enforcement officer during an investigation or upon arrest. Or the imposter may present to law enforcement a counterfeit license containing another person's data.

Frequently, but not always, the imposter fraudulently obtained a driver's license or identification card in the victim's name and provides that identification document to law enforcement. Or the imposter, without showing any photo identification, uses the name of a friend or relative. In many cases, the imposter is cited for a traffic violation or for a misdemeanor violation and is released from the arrest. The imposter signs the citation and promises to appear in court. If the imposter does not appear in court, the magistrate may issue a bench warrant, but the warrant of arrest will be under the victim's name.

The identity theft victim may not know there is a warrant of arrest issued under his/her name. The victim may unexpectedly be detained pursuant to a routine traffic stop and then subsequently arrested and taken to county jail (booked) because of the outstanding bench warrant.

In some cases the imposter will appear in court for the traffic or misdemeanor violation and plead guilty without the victim being aware of this event. In other cases, the imposter is arrested and booked at the county jail for a felony such as a drunk driving or other serious public offense. The imposter provides the victim's name and personal information. This information is then recorded in the countywide data base and is usually transferred to the State's criminal records data base and possibly to the national data bases, the National Crime Information Center (NCIC)

Some identity theft victims, unaware of the earlier criminal activity by the imposter, may learn of the impersonation when the victim is denied employment or terminated from employment. In these cases, the employer conducted a background investigation and had relied upon the criminal history found under the victim's name. Note that the employer is legally obligated to inform the victim of the reason for the rejection of employment. (See Federal Trade Commission information about this requirement atwww.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/credit/bus08.shtm

Unfortunately, as with financial identity theft, the burden of clearing one's name within the criminal justice system is primarily on the victim. The victim must act quickly and assertively to minimize the damage. Yet, the responsibility to correct the erroneous data in the various criminal justice computer systems is with the officials working within the criminal justice system. There are no established procedures for clearing one's wrongful criminal record.
